Screw Pine is also called Pandanus and Walking Palm. The plant is far from a Pine in appearance and origin, but the name is derived from its large fruit that resembles a large green pinecone. Walking Palm is a far better name for evoking the appearance of this multitrunked tree with frond-like leaves. The leaves are spirally arranged and in many varieties are supported by multiple trunks formed by aerial roots that appear to walk across the landscape. They are a popular indoor plant when young and mature specimens cannot be excelled as a specimen that conjures up the feel of the tropics. Screw Pine makes an excellent upper level accent in large massed plantings. Its unusual form is visible at large scale.
Screw-Pine may be grown in full sun or shade on well-drained soil in regularly irrigated landscapes south of Palm Beach County and further north near the coast. In its native habitat the Walking Palm can be found growing on the banks of tidal estuaries, hence, it is quite salt tolerant.
