Once you see a Licuala Palm you never forget them. The many species of Licuala all share more or less circular leaves mounted on long and slender petioles. The leaves may be pleated like Licuala grandis or divided like Licuala spinosa, but in all cases the leaf has the appearance of a delicate stiff fan.
Licuala grandis is perhaps the most popular Licuala Palm. It is a single trunked palm that grows to about 5' making it ideal as an upper level tropical accent. The pleated nearly circular leaves are held on slender delicate petioles arising from the slender trunk giving this palm a lovely and graceful appearance.
These palms make a beautiful houseplant. When planting outdoors be careful to plant them only in frost protected areas. Outside of zone 11 make sure they are in protected locations near a building. Plant them in fertile irrigated and partially shaded landscapes.
