Latan Palms superficially resemble the Bismarck Palm when young, but as they mature the thinner gray ringed trunk and a smaller canopy can distinguish them. Their silver to bluish green large stiff fronds make them stand out in the landscape like Bismarck Palms. When young the three species of this genus have brightly colored leaf stalks in red, blue and yellow making them particularly beautiful as an upper level accent. Latan Palms eventually reach large size, but their slow growth rate justifies their use as an understory palm.


Like Bismarck Palms, Latan Palms can be difficult to transplant. They should be given regular fertilization with palm fertilizer and be careful never to cut fronds higher than parallel to the ground plane for best growth.
