The Date Palm has a regal, formal and stiff appearance resembling the columns of ancient Egyptian architecture. Indeed, Egyptian columns were probably Date Palms before they were copied in stone. This history makes the Date Palm an outstanding palm for the front of large buildings, for large public spaces and as a street tree. The grayish to bluish green fronds arise from the geometrically textured trunk in a straight stiff fashion which when pruned gives them a typical shaving brush appearance. When allowed to grow with a full crown (which is recommended for best growth) Date Palms have a more graceful appearance.
Medjool Date Palm is a variety of Date Palms which appears to be best adapted to the humid environment of Florida. Date Palms can grow anywhere in peninsular Florida. Date Palms are native to Oases and other fertile spots within the frequently dry areas of the Mediterranean. They do best in fertile, regularly irrigated, but well drained landscapes, nevertheless, they are highly drought tolerant and can withstand highly alkaline soils up to ph 8. They are moderately salt tolerant and may be planted near the coast if protected from direct salt spray.
