10' - 12' height, 25 gallon pot - Acer rubrum
Red Maple here in Florida is the same species as the well-known Red Maples throughout the north. Native stands can be seen along Alligator Alley as you approach Naples. In Florida Red Maple is usually about 35'-40' in height, but the same species in the north has been known to grow to 120'. It should be noted that while there does not appear to be a recognized difference of variety between our South Florida Red Maples and the uncultivated northern population most landscapers always prefer to plant locally grown specimens of this tree.
Red Maple is an excellent tree where a northern look is desired. It is also a preferred tree for wetland planting. Red Maple is one of the few trees that displays significant leaf color change in South Florida. It also provides a display of red new growth in the spring and throughout the year. Be aware that it loses all its leaves for about 3 months in the winter.
Red Maple can be grown anywhere in Florida in fertile, irrigated landscapes. It is not salt tolerant, however, so avoid coastal planting.
Delivery is free in Broward, Dade, and southern Palm Beach counties.
