10'-12' height, 25 gallon, contact us for larger sizes - Pongamia pinnata
Pongam is also known as the Indian Oilseed and in its native habitat of India is called the Karanja. The seed produces a high grade oil, which has numerous medicinal purposes and is now being used to create biodiesel fuel in order to supply the energy needs of India.
Pongam is a dense nearly evergreen shade tree that grows to about 45' in height with equal spread in cultivation. The canopy is a spreading umbrella of dense glossy green leaves. The crown is a attached to a short, smooth, gray, low-branching trunk which is vaguely reminiscent of the Banyan. It should be noted, however, that the Pongam resembles the Banyan or Ficus in more ways than one. Its roots are often found on the surface and its growth habit does not easily form a single trunk for good structure.
Pongam grows in full sun or light shade on a wide range of well drained soils.
