This native hedge cactus can be shaped into an impenetrable barrier that appears to have a yellow halo of thorns around the cactus pads. The large yellow flowers in spring float above the cactus pads to add more delight to our experience of a maintenance free plant.
Opuntia can be planted in well-drained soils without irrigation and forgotten. The only care that's needed is to cut some of the cactus pads from time to time to shape the mass. The pads can then be placed in the soil to grow more cacti.
Plant them in hot, well-drained locations anywhere in Florida. They perform well with gravel mulch. The thorns are a blessing and a curse. The thorns are a nuisance to well-behaved people you might like, but the thorns make these plants one of the few plants that disorderly children will not and apparently cannot destroy.
