This small clustering palm is native to the Mediterranean region and is common in Italy, Spain and southern France. Hence, it is one of the most cold hardy palms on earth and can be grown in nearly all areas of Florida. Its leaves are delicate deeply cut fans and have a silvery green color. It makes an excellent upper level accent where its small form and clustering habit can be appreciated. The silvery green foliage has a neutral color that can be set against many different colors of foliage or walls.
The clustering habit of this palm permits the shaping of this palm by removing suckers from the base. In this way you can shape the palm from single trunked to multitrunked specimens. Allowed to cluster this palm can also form a kind of dense barrier or screen which use is enhanced by its spiny leaf stalks.
Mediterranean Fan Palm can be grown in fertile irrigated landscapes nearly anywhere in Florida. They are drought and slightly salt tolerant.
