Sabal Palm is the state tree of Florida. It is common throughout the state and readily grows in any vacant plot of land. It may be planted in the driest of sites such as the embankments of interstate highways where runoff removes 50% of rainfall and it also may be planted in wetland plantings where it is exposed to periodic flooding. It may be grown in full sun or partial shade, may be grown near the coast or anywhere in the interior, and grows in just about any type of soil from marl to rock. Also, it's the least expensive palm or tree that can be obtained at mature size. With all these virtues it's easy to see why it is so commonly planted despite the fact that its appearance does not measure up to many of the other palm species available in Florida.
Sabal Palm is easy to transplant provided that it's watered regularly until established. To ensure successful establishment of Sabal Palms remove all fronds except the bud since all cut roots die back to the trunk after tranplant.
