Live Oak is an evergreen Oak that is reputed to be the longest lived of all Oaks. When you plant this Oak you may be planting a tree that outlives not only your house or building, but your civilization. Ancient Southern Live Oaks are the emblem of the southern United States. Old specimens develop a massive trunk and great spread of low branches whose size and beauty can only be matched by large tropical Ficus. Unlike Ficus, however, Live Oak is one of the most storm resistant of trees. After Hurricane Andrew Live Oak was strongly recommended for further planting.
Live Oaks thrive in fertile, moist, but well-drained soils, however, they tolerate a wide variety of soils and conditions including alkaline soils and minimal irrigation. They are fairly salt-tolerant and are suitable for seaside planting. When young they are moderately fast growing when regularly fertilized and irrigated, if the soil is not too alkaline.
