This family of plants is grown as house plants throughout the United States, but many varieties may be grown as landscape plants in Florida and other tropical lands. Indeed, the Brazilian landscape architect, Roberto Burle-Marx used Bromeliads in landscapes ranging from roof gardens for tall buildings to public parks. Their colorful foliage, symetrical form, and easy maintenance make Bromeliads an outstanding choice for many landscapes.
Bromeliads can be used as specimens, container plants, or groundcovers. Place individual plants about 18 to 24 inches apart for ground cover. Massed Bromeliads can be a bright tropical accent for a partially shaded spot when planted in front of tropical foliage such as palms. No irrigation is needed to maintain Bromeliads once they are established.
